Saturday Journal Page

Gosh - I have been so busy this week.  The shop has been busy with half term - I have had a couple of weddings to do favors for - and I have been busy with the Personal Impressions work.  It should all start coming together next month and settle into some sort of routine - it's always chaos when these things start from scratch.

So this afternoon is a very leisurely playing with journals time.

Simple layout for this - but it's so pretty.

Brush over the bottom half of the page with a pale green Memento ink - put a pale blue at the top of the page - just cover the centre of the page area.  Stamp with a silhouette type stamp - then mask the stamped area with an oval or a circle - what ever suits your stamp shape.  The black is applied with a baby wipe to keep a smooth surface.  I may doodle over the edges at a later date

Paint brushes and roll

I made a new roll for my paint brushes.  Isn't this pretty?

The background is one of the heavier weight fabrics that I have - it's a canvas type cotton with words printed on it - suitable for me don't you think!  I have even managed to use one of the patterned bias bindings that I have had in the shop and been desperate to find an excuse to use.

I just love my pretty brushes - the all the handles are patterned

They go right down to tiny points - I only paint little things - I love adding tiny little details

They are actually nail art brushes - yes really - and they can take quite a bit of hammering from me as they for all the nail polish and remover that nail tecs use.

This is the type of thing I get.  The brushes have loads of different tips - they are very inexpensive and I am getting hooked on collecting all the different ones.

Saturday Journal (on Sunday)

Yes - I know - late again - running at slow speed at the moment

and my journal page is a bit different from usual.  Personal Impressions sent me some Chalk Vintage Paints from Viva (and some past and stencils) and I wanted to experiment a bit with them in my journal to see how they feel - you can't beat getting your fingers in something and taking it all apart to find out how it works ;-)

So here is today's (yesterday's) page - and there will be a proper full report on the Personal Impressions blog soon

I created a background

Added a white space in the middle to stamp on - and used the dark paint to colour the stencil paste

It is going to take the weekend to dry

good old Fibro

It's been pretty full on for the past couple of weeks - for several different reasons - some good - and some not so - and it's all taken it's toll on me again.

I feel such a wuss! There is still tons to get done - as there always seems to be.  Very little of it is stuff that desperately HAS to be done - mostly things I want to get tidied up - I still have not got sorted fully from the upheavals of the moves - the box room needs a through clear out.  There are a couple of kit projects that are waiting to be finished and made up.  You know stuff like that, that I want to finish and tidy away so I can settle my head and thoughts.

It's no good though I am going to have to admit that - I am really fragile at the moment.  I need to really rest myself and totally clear my head - get rid of the worries and stress - otherwise I can feel another fibro flare up coming on - and I have done so well to manage them.

so I am going to do a bit of gentle crafting and get into my colouring and zentangles - that will do me the world of good!

Bible art Journaling

I have a couple of new pages done with Rebekah's journaling group. She is a bit product heavy - so I am having to improvise quite a bit.  I am skipping the watercolour painting until my set of Gansai Tambi arrives - hopefully at the beginning of June.

This page has a verse heat embossed in glittery green - then shaded with Distress inks

As I don't have any delicate watercolour paints (Inktense pencils are really strong, vibrant colours -well they are when I use them!) - I dabbed a bit of ink from some Distress pads - gave them a spray with water =- and used that to shade my drawn tags a bit

And lastly - my book is just an old second hand one but you can get proper bibles that are designed for journaling and note taking with big wide margins and footers.  As I had no margin to doodle in - I added a flap and glued it in - not sure about iit really

Quick tag tutorial

As you know I have been making pencil cases to organise my colouring supplies

I really needed some sort of tag that I could write on to label what's in them - then I remembered this cute little trick with an old credit size plastic card.

Cut the card in half length ways (please make sure it's not valid for anything!!!)

If there is raised lettering you will need to sand it flat.  Cover the card with double sided tape. Make sure tape goes right up to the edges.

Cover both sides with some pretty paper - punch a hole and round all the corners. You can decorate them up with some glitter glue and a few gems - add a ribbon or split ring to add it to your keys or case what ever.

I added a plain plate on ione side so I can write on it what's in the pencil case

Dead easy and just a bit diffferent.

Saturday Journal Page

I did this in my book as one of Rebekah's projects

It's actually Gelatos rubbed over a clear embossed background - I thought just how effective and pretty it was and I wanted to experiment more with the technique.

I created this page today.

The very background is a stamp from Docrafts range Happy Days - it's a huge background stamp of tickets - really useful.  The tag background was created by pushing versamark ink through some sequin waste and clear embossing.  I scribbled a bit of Gelato colour down - then you have to really work it in well with your finger and gently wipe over with a paper towel.

I like the idea of Gelatos - all these little lipstick size soft, squishy sticks of pure colour -  but in use the waxy residue acts as a blocker to adding other layers - needs more practice before I decide if I really, really like them

Sneaky extra journal page

I sneaked in an extra journal page - just to keep the juices flowing.

The background is Adirondack paint burgundy and distress gold paint - the blue is paint through a bit of sequin waste and the circles outlined in black - the animal stripes are a stamp in black and highlight white lines - the 'sew' is drawn - the lovely is stamped - and all the sewing items are stamped - coloured gold and cut out.

super cute paint brushes

These have just arrived - super cute paint brushes - the ribbon twist spirals up through the clear handle.  Perfect  for my washes - I only work very small.

They are actually nail art brushes - I am getting a bit addicted to nail art brushes - they are so pretty and very a reasonable cost too

No journal today

After all the recent creativity - I can't do my journal page today - I have a huge project on the go.

I am scribing up a grooms' speech.  I have done a few wedding vows over the years - but never a whole speech before.  It's going to be massive.  I am working directly from the roll as I don't know how long it will eventually be - but it will be in the region of 6 foot.

It's not the lettering that is the hard part - it's the sheer size of the piece - it has taken over my whole space and I don't want to do anything else until it's finished 1) so that I stay in the 'groove' - and 2) so it stays neat and clean..

I am aiming to be finished with the lettering on Wednesday - then Thursday to remove all the guide lines - and finished for the weekend. Normally I do a practise piece - but this is too big - and it has to be out next weekend.

I will show you when I finish!

New bible page

The next challenge in Rebekah's art journal is another pencil watercolour.  I have to admit that I did not really get into the groove with this one.  I undercoated the page with pva to protect and strengthen the paper - normally I use a really thin pva wash and wipe it over with a baby wipe to get a really thin, smooth coating, then I dry it really well with my heat gun.

This is how I prepared the page before I did my lion - very slowly and gently building up a surface.

When I did today's page I think I rushed it a bit - I used the pva neat and it was far too thick and it made ridges - it resisted the watercolour too much and was not nice to work over.  I resorted to using inktense practically neat - and it left me no room for graduating and shading the colours.  it didn't turn out to bad in the end - I just didn't enjoy it as much as normal.

I have just treated myself to  the 36 set Gansai Tambi Watercolour paints.  I have been trying to get a set of Peerless watercolours - and it's just about impossible in the UK - these look to be as close as possible to them - and other users have said they react in a similar way.  Thing is - they have to come direct from Japan - and will take about 3 weeks - I WANT THEM NOW!!!!!

Crochet Pencil Case

Right - you have made a little bag for your note book - now you need a pencil case for your pens.

It's really simple - all you need is the double crochet stitch

You will need:
Double knitting yarn in your favourite colour
4mm crochet hook
Co-ordinating fabric to line
Zip
Sharp needle
Matching thread

To make
Leave a long tail at the start - make your starting loop
Foundation row: chain 37 loops.
Row 1: starting in the 2th chain from your hook – work 1 double crochet in each of the chain stitches.
Row 2: work 1 chain, work 1 double crochet in each of the double crochet.
Turn the work after every row so that you are working back along your previous row.

Repeat until rows until your work measures 8” / 20cm.  Finish off leaving a long tail.

to line your pencil case - cut a piece of fabric a little larger that the finished crochet - turn under the side edges of the fabric and sew the fabric to the crochet.

fold the pencil case and sew up the sides - catching just the very edges of the crochet.
Turn the pencil case inside out and catch together the edges of the lining fabric.
Turn the pencil case the right way out  - turn under the fabric edges and sew a zip length to each side.

I get my zips by length - it's much more economical that buying a 'finished' one - and you can always get the size you need.

Sew the crochet to the zip closing in the base of the zip.

It is fine for the zip to sit proud of the top edge - it has become a design detail for the zip to show now.  You can even get them with patterned edges now
